Please let us formally introduce ourselves to you and your family. Dominion Academy has been established by our family; Adam Guiney is a local business owner, and Jennifer Guiney is former junior high and high school teacher now a stay-at-home mother. Our four children are P (6), G (5), A (3), and C (2). Dominion Academy has been founded on a dream of a classical, Christian education for the children of Edmonton.
At this point in time, we will be unable to complete our plans to open for the autumn of 2025. The series of events that have led to this will be explained below, but our current plan is to spend the remainder of this year searching for a proper space for the school and preparing it for classes to begin in the autumn of 2026. We also hope to offer more grades than our original plan for a K-3, including a preschool.
Adam and Jennifer first started seriously searching for schools for our children, as many do, when our eldest was three years old. We were never fully satisfied with any of the options available to us in Edmonton or the surrounding area and settled on a local religious public school. We attended the information sessions and felt that this was the best option for our children, though it missed many of the things we were hoping for. Before our oldest began kindergarten in 2023 we discovered a new charter school opening that autumn delivering a Classical model of education. After much prayer we decided to try this second option instead and discovered the wonderful world of Classical education. We cannot say enough good things about this school, but it had one glaring omission for us that began to weigh more heavily upon our hearts as time passed. We craved a Christian education and community for our children but hoped that we could stay in a Classical school setting. After many nights of searching online, praying together and weighing our options Adam asked the defining question: “Why can’t we start our own school?”
We began looking into the process and received assistance from the Association of Independent Schools & Colleges of Alberta, and were connected with Christian Fusion Academy. We created a partnership with Christian Fusion Academy whereby we would be able to operate under their supervision and to receive accreditation from Alberta Education. We received the accreditation for South Edmonton in early February and immediately began our search for a building. To say we searched every possible option is not an understatement. We had three realtors and four property management companies looking for properties for us; we spoke to over thirty churches, countless personal contacts, scoured MLS listings, and spent hours driving around industrial parks and the periphery of the city to look at new business developments. We viewed many properties and eventually one church – which felt like a miracle – agreed to take us in. Unfortunately, we after coming to an agreement with the church we ran directly into the bureaucratic nightmare of city zoning. We leaned on God and felt his guidance that it was not the right time, to be patient, and to build this school more slowly and solidly. So that is what we plan to do.
We still feel called to open Dominion Academy in order to give children a place to grow in the love of Jesus Christ, to guide our children to think freely and critically, and to uphold excellence as the goal for each soul; to embrace what is True, Good, and Beautiful.
